The Current and Future State of the Movement's Historiography

오늘날 스톤-캠벨 운동의 모든 지류에서 활동하는 다수의, 아마 대부분의, 역사가들 사이에 하나의 분명한 의식이 있다. 그것은 우리가 하나의 공동의 이야기를 공유하고 있다는 인식이다. 특히 과거 20년 동안, 많은 회의와 저술들이 역사적 연구를 공동으로 진행하기 위해 각각의 지류에서 학자들을 불러 모았다. 그리스도의 제자들의 역사학회의 저널, <제자들>(Discipliana)지는 학회의 ‘포레스트 커크패트리크 역사가들 세미나’(Forrest Kirkpatrick Historians Seminar)로부터 얻어진 스톤-캠벨 운동의 세 지류들이 안고 있는 정체성의 이슈들에 관해 여러 논문들을 출판하였다. 또한 특정한 역사적 주제들을 공동으로 다룬 다음과 같은 저서들이 출판되었다: <알렉산더 캠벨 2백주년 기념 강연들>(Lectures in Honor of the Alexander Campbell Bicentennial, 1988), <맥락으로 본 케인 릿지>(Cane Ridge in Context, 1992), <소명과 미래 비전의 세움>(Founding Vocation and Future Vision, 1999) 그리고 <토마스 캠벨의 “선언과 제언”에서 본 그리스도인의 일치, 평화와 순수성에 대한 탐구>(The Quest for Christian Unity, Peace and Purity in Thomas Campbell's Declaration and Address, 2000). 그리스도의 제자들 역사학회와 최근의 스톤-캠벨 대화(Stone-Campbell Dialogue)의 여러 노력은 역사가들의 네트워크들을 형성하는데 기여하였다. 인터넷은 또한 스톤-캠벨 운동의 역사에 관심을 갖는 모든 분야의 학자들과 아마추어들이 상호 교류할 수 있는 매체가 되었다. 인터넷 매체로 인해서 본서 <스톤-캠벨 운동의 대사전>은 총괄 편집인들과 여러 위원회로부터 수백 명에 이르는 대사전의 기고자들에 이르기까지 모든 이들의 합작으로 이뤄졌다.

스톤-캠벨 운동의 세 주요한 지류 각각의 학자들은 공동으로 하나의 종합역사를 썼고, 출판을 앞두고 있다. 공동의 이야기를 저술하는 것에 관한 합의점들이 부상하고 있다. 게다가 이 역작에 참여한 역사가들은 믿음과 헌신과 통찰력을 지닌 인물들로서 서로를 인정하게 되었다. 그리스도의 교회(Christ' church)가 하나임을 사명으로 천명하기 시작한 스톤-캠벨 운동의 세 지류들의 이들 대표들은, 이런 공동 노력을 통해서, 그 꿈의 실현에 언젠가는 기여하게 될 것이다.
