"A TYPICAL
'CHU-IL' (LORD'S DAY) FOR A KOREAN CHRISTIAN"
The day
begins with the 4:30 a.m. prayer service (hymns and prayer) for an hour or so.
Then it's home from the church building for the breakfast of rice, kimchi (hot
pickled cabbage), seaweed or beansprout soup, and on occasion, fortunate days,
egg or little dried fishes.
At 9
o'clock, there is Bible School for the children (many congregations have no
adult Bible class but have other adult services during the week) led by
newly-Christian highschool girls or young adults. This lasts until 10 o'clock.
The Worship Service begins at 10:30, but singing starts at 10:15 or sooner as
the members come in. They deposit their small bags of rice for the preacher in a
box at the back of the church building. Then the men seat themselves on the
floor on one side of the building, while the women seat themselves on the other
side, all bowing in private prayer as soon as seated. Each person has his own
precious Bible and hymnal, how he or she has scrimped to buy these. They sing
"There is a Green Hill Far Away," "Glory to His Name," "What a Friend We Have In
Jesus," and other favorites. Their voices swell until the little mud-walled
building seems ready to burst. Then a member leads in prayer, his voice rising
and falling with feeling. Members, especially the older men and women, sway with
emotion and add verbal amens. The preacher reads the scripture and preaches
vociferously, then gives the invitation to accept Christ. After the invitation
hymn, the offertory hymn is sung and prayer given. Long poles with cloth bags on
the ends are thrust down the rows by the deacons and deaconesses to receive the
offering. Last is the Communion Service, officiated by the minister in many
cases. Elders serve the men and deaconesses serve the women.
It is warm
enough (sometimes even in winter) baptisms are administered in a nearby creek or
river. Sometimes they are administered in the nearest bath-house (in the 'ofuro'
or large Japanese bathtub).
The noon
meal is much the same as the breakfast, as is the evening meal. Then the
Christian attends the evening Worship Service which begins at 7:30 or as late as
9 o'clock in the summer and is much the same as in the morning but without the
Lord's Supper.
