Muhammad's Belligerence and Christ's Agape (Php.
2:5-8)
Ramadan 2015 begins for a month from 18th day of June on which the
crescent moon arises. According to Islamic tradition, there was the crescent
moon on that night which Muhammad received the revelation from Gabriel.
Muslims who thoroughly keep from idolatry take the crescent, which
has given them an idea of belligerence from the increscent moon, as a symbol as
if the Jewish people do the Menorah and Christians the cross. It is said that
the Muslims conquered Christian Byzantine Empire and adopted the crescent from
the flag of Constantinople in 1453 after a dream in which Sultan Osman saw the
crescent covering the earth. But the Muslims have a custom to artistically
depict the new moon that looks like the old moon. I guess they do so because
they write and read the Arabic from right to left and because this makes them
place the pictures at the left of Arabic letters.
On
the contrary, Jesus was arrested on the Passover night of full moon which may
give an idea of emptiness or renunciation from the decrescent moon and crucified
on that same day and died for our salvation. The incarnation of God and the
Christ crucified may teach us the very fact that salvation begins from humbling
and emptying oneself. According to Philippians 2:5-8, the Christ Jesus, "being
in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in
human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and
became obedient to death-even death on a cross!" on the day of the full moon.
Therefore, the Lord's Supper is not an ordinance to fill up the plate and the
cup with elements, but an ordinance to empty the plate and the cup which have
been already filled up with elements as sacred symbols of the body and the blood
of Christ. And participating in the Lord's Supper to empty bread and cup
elements is something to empty ourselves just as the Christ emptied himself in
His entirety.
